Which breast enhancement procedure should I choose?

It is impossible to accurately answer this question without an examination and analysis of your unique anatomy and goals. Many women think that they need a breast lift, only to discover that they can achieve the improvement they desire with breast enlargement and breast lift combined. Women with overly large breasts generally opt for a breast reduction.

How do I choose the right implant?

Selecting the right implant for you is a highly personal process, and what works for one woman may not for another. As you plan your surgery, you'll have a lot of decisions to make, including the choice between saline and silicone. Beyond material, implants come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and projections to perfectly complement your natural contours. During your consultation, Dr. Rios carefully examines your current proportions and discusses your desired results with you. He'll guide you through the process of choosing your implants, explaining the likely results you can expect with each to help you make an informed decision.

What risks are associated with breast enlargement?

As with any surgery, breast augmentation does carry a certain level of risk. Risks include capsular contracture (which is when the tissue around the implant hardens), loss of sensation, bleeding, asymmetry, and complications related to anesthesia. Dr. Rios prides himself on making sure the procedure and recovery are as safe and comfortable as possible. He will carefully explain all the risks ahead of time so you can make the right choice for you.

Can I combine breast enhancement with other procedures?

Women often elect to combine their breast enhancement with other procedures. Dr. Rios specializes in body contouring procedures including tummy tuck and liposuction. During your consultation, he'll explain what other options you can add to achieve the look you desire and discuss the pros and cons of paired procedures.

Will implants help if one breast is larger than the other?

Yes. A slight degree of breast asymmetry is very common and is not very noticeable. If the difference is a cup size or more, however, breast augmentation surgery may be an appropriate correction. If a woman wants to enlarge both breasts, different sized implants are necessary. It's also possible to perform breast reduction on one breast to make it the same size as the smaller breast.

Should I wait to get breast implants until after having children?

Some women are concerned that breast implants will affect their ability to breastfeed. Although there is a slight risk of that happening, most women who get breast augmentation don't encounter breastfeeding complications. There is also a possibility that pregnancy and the hormone changes that accompany it may affect the size of your breasts, so if you get implants beforehand, those surgical results could be affected. Talk to Dr. Rios during your consultation if this is a concern for you, and together you can create a plan that works for your lifestyle.

Is there surgery to reduce the size of areolas without breast augmentation?

Women who are self-conscious about the size of their areolas — the darker areas of skin surrounding the nipples — can undergo revision surgery to make them smaller. If the breasts are saggy, a breast lift can be combined for optimal results.

What can I expect during recovery?

Dr. Rios is pleased to use a "rapid recovery" technique during breast augmentation surgery. By taking special steps during surgery, patients enjoy shorter, more comfortable recovery periods that don't include narcotics, drains, or compression garments. While traditional breast augmentation typically requires about a week of rest and recuperation at home, most of Dr. Rios's patients are able to return to work after just 2 days.
