Saline or Silicone Implants?
Both saline and silicone gel breast implants are approved by the FDA for breast augmentation. Choice of breast implant for our Illinois patients usually comes down to personal preference. Consider these pros and cons:
- Many women choose saline implants because, if the implants rupture, the sterile saltwater solution they contain will be harmlessly absorbed by the body. The rupture will be immediately noticeable and thus quickly addressed.
- Silicone is the choice of many women because it can offer a more natural look and feel. The FDA has approved silicone gel implants for women age 22 and older and recommends that women get regular screenings to see if their silicone implants have ruptured (these implants will hold together even if the shell is pierced or torn, so a rupture would not be immediately noticeable).

Most patients think of breast size in terms of bra cup size. But as you probably know, not all C-cup bras are created equally. Dr. Rios will explain how to choose the size of your breast implants, which are measured in cubic centimeters (cc), rather than bra sizes. The size and shape of your body are also important to consider when selecting a breast implant size so that the results appear natural. Some tips to help you decide on the size of your breast implants include:
- Look at before-and-after photos of Dr. Rios' patients and note the ones you find appealing.
- Listen to Dr. Rios' recommendation, which is based on years of experience, his trained aesthetic eye, and your own goals.
Breast implants are either round or shaped like a teardrop to mirror a breast's natural slope. It's important to know that teardrop, or anatomical, implants are always textured to ensure they don't rotate after being inserted. That's not a consideration with round implants, which can be either smooth or textured. Round implants give more fullness at the top of the breast, creating more cleavage. Besides the shape, Dr. Rios will also discuss the "profile" of your breast implants. This refers to how far your breasts will project from your chest. Implants typically come in low, moderate, or high profile, and certain styles fit certain body frames best.
The Next Step
After you've chosen your implants, Dr. Rios will help you prepare for your breast augmentation procedure. By adjusting each step of the breast enlargement process, his technique allows for a customized and satisfying outcome. He will also discuss the risks associated with surgery and how you can work together to minimize these risks.
There are a number of reasons to consider breast augmentation just as there are a number of different options for your breast implant. Dr. Rios guides his patients through every step of the process. Whatever your goal may be, he'll help you choose the right implants to achieve it.
